A Crisp, Cool Autumn Night

It was a crisp, cool autumn night, the last day in October. She hurried down the moonlit trail, unconcerned about the events of late. Ben had asked her to meet him in the park where they could be alone.
Oh, Ben! The very thought of Ben sent shivers down her spine. So handsome! So charming! And he had taken an interest in her!
Her best friend, Meagan, had warned her about Ben. “He’ll love you and leave you,” she had said, “he’ll break your heart.” But Meagan was just jealous; Ben was interested in her, not Meagan.
As she hurried along, she thought about the serial murders. Three times lately, a woman’s body had been found in a secluded location, drained of blood, fang marks on her neck. The investigators had no explanation, no suspect, no lead.
And now she was afraid. Here she was, all alone in the park.... What would she do if a stranger approached? What if the murderer was hiding behind one of the trees, waiting to ambush her? If only she could reach safety! If only she could reach Ben!
She was running now. And there he was! “Ben,” she cried, as she fell into his outstretched arms. All was right in the world now, she was safe, and with the man she loved! They hugged tightly, kissed passionately, then Ben brushed her hair behind her left shoulder. She was in heaven! Until she wasn’t, until she was overcome by terror as his fangs pierced her neck.
